Fight Disease With This Super(food) Coffee
Alright coffee drinkers, this is for you!
Every time I lead a program that eliminates coffee there's a lot of grief and anxiety. People LOVE their morning ritual and I get it. I love it too. Who doesn't love the smell, and the quick pick-me-up it delivers? And coffee does have its benefits (high in antioxidants and can increase blood flow to the brain), it can be pretty rough for those of you who have adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalance, thyroid issues, diabetes, reflux or are dealing with high anxiety. If you want detailed, scientific evidence for this you can read more here in Dr. Mark Hyman's thorough article here. But I'm not about being Debbie Downer today! I'm about how to drink coffee in a way that serves your body.
Enter...SUPERFOOD COFFEE! if you ARE going to drink coffee (and let's face it, most of us are!), let's infuse it with superfoods! Coffee alone steals energy from your body, but if you add the superfoods I've listed below, your opening up your cells for the nutrients to wash right in. This concoction will help balance blood sugar, put you into fat burning mode, and pump you full of antioxidants and protein! It's really like a meal in a cup, especially if you add the collagen and coconut oil because you're getting protein and healthy fat as well.
Be sure to get organic beans because this is the most heavily spayed crop in the entire world today. Remember, when your body is toxic it produces more fat cells to protect your organs from those toxins...your fat wraps itself around it to protect you. Crazy, right?
Here's the recipe (I quadruple my batch of spices and cacao and put it in a jar so I can use it when I want to):
Superfood Coffee (this is going to feel like a treat for you, I promise!):
1 cup organic coffee
1 tsp coconut oil
1/2 tsp raw cacao - high antioxidants
1/4 tsp turmeric - non-inflammatory, helps cleanse
1 tsp collagen - skin nails and hair
1/4 cinnamon - boost metabolism and balance blood sugar
and nutmeg
1 tsp sweetener (optional) - use raw honey or coconut sugar which has a lower glycemic hit
Throw it all in a blender, add raw organic honey if you want to sweeten it up. Blending it makes it frothy. You can use this as a meal--the mesquite is your protein, the coconut if your healthy fat!
Note: you can have fun with this recipe. Try different amounts of these foods, or add in maca, (hormone balancer and energy booster), mesquite (a lovely protein and vitaminK or lacuma (full of vitamins and has a caramel taste)!
Benefits of the foods I listed:
Coconut oil: good fat which will keep you feeling fuller longer and it will help you go into fat burning mode helps the caffeine and sugar get delivered very slowly. You'll have constant energy for 3-4 hours and not those big highs and low lows.
Cacao: extremely high in anti-oxidants. These are compounds that are believed to neutralize free radicals and protect the body from inflammatory damage. Anti-oxidants include vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals--helpful plant compounds.
Turmeric: most powerful herb on the planet at fighting and potentially reversing disease. 6000+ studies reference curcumin (the compound found in turmeric)--the most interesting finding is that when turmeric is compared to conventional medicine its benefits equal that of many pharmaceutical medications.
Collagen: the most abundant protein found in our bodies it's great for your hair, skin and joints, but it's also a fabulous anti-aging supplement. I wrote a more detailed list about why collagen is so incredible for you in my private FB community for women. Join here! Cinnamon: this medicinal spice has been used around the world for thousands of years. It's been found to balance blood sugar and has compounds that make it an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, immunity-boosting, cancer and heart disease-protecting powerhouse.
