Moisturizing: The Tide is Turning

Hello and happy summer! Wow. Where does the time go? It's hard for me to believe we're already into July. My family has had a very busy summer so far. We're in transition from our home of almost a decade here on Bainbridge to a new house on our verdant isle. It's bittersweet for us. Mostly it's exciting, but leaving the place where we made so many marvelous memories... well, it makes me weepy.

It doesn't help that we're unmoored this month. Long story short: we're hopping from home to home (thank you dear friends who are hosting us!) while waiting to get into our new casa at the end of the month. We're trying to view it as a Great Adventure, but honestly, it's not easy. I LOVE being in my kitchen, creating healthy meals and snacks, having access to my everyday tools and familiar fixin's.For now, I'm working on keeping healthy by employing small, easy tricks (this works for road trips too!): having a cooler at the ready full of store-bought hard-boiled eggs, greens powders to mix in water, Kind bars, carrots, hummus, small packs of almond butter, nuts/seed mixes, and fruit.I'm also doing as much deep breathing as I can -- standing in grocery lines, driving, before I get out of bed. This helps me keep my adrenals balanced; I can really feel it when I don't do this! If you'd like to know one simple technique, watch this short video I made last summer. And  b r e a t h e.

And finally, part 3 of our three-part skin series! Thank you to Patricia Intihar for sharing your great knowledge with us.

Happy calm happy summer!

Note: for those of you who are curious, that's my son Roan with Mike Trout, his hero. And dairy free sorbet. :)

Glowing Skin Part 3: Moisturize!

By Patricia Intihar

The final step in your daily skin care is to moisturize. It's probably no great surprise that I am going to recommend moisturizing with oils!

Coating your face with oil may strike some as crazy talk. Oil clogs pores and causes breakouts, right? Wrong. Lotions and creams are simply oils emulsified in water. The age-old saying that "oil and water don't mix" is right on, so it gets complicated. Water-based moisturizers often list water as the first ingredient, which easily breeds bacteria, therefore you need a preservative. Emulsifiers are needed to suspend the droplets of oil. Fragrance is added to mask the chemical smells. Add to that fillers, colors and a host of other undesirables and you will find the back of the bottle ingredient lists are long, containing chemicals we can't begin to pronounce and have to Google to find their function. Our recommendation is to skip all that and use oils to nourish your face and lock in hydration. Many small companies and established brands are doing just that. It's important that the oils must be plant based and organic. Remember your skin is your largest organ, what you put on your skin is absorbed and circulates through the body. Vitamin rich oils to look for include apricot, jojoba, avocado, rosehip seed, olive and seabuckthorn.

Be Radiant. Be Nourished. Be Beautiful.
